Museum of Fine Arts

Dreams and Realities: Latin American Prints, Drawings, and Watercolors 1950-1991
Through February 6 2011
The Magic Eye (1989), a large-scale etching and aquatint by the Cuban-born artist Julio Larraz from the Museum’s collection, inspired this exhibition. Larraz transforms the ordinary objects in the composition, from the oversized melons to the expressive lighting and palette, to create a mood of intense drama.

The more than 30 works in Dreams and Realities offer a fascinating introduction to the themes and styles in post-1950 Latin American art.  Influences are complex and multilayered: Cubism, Surrealism, indigenous cultures, the tradition of caricature and social commentary, and magic realism. Among the other artists represented are José Luis Cuevas and Francisco Zúñiga (Mexican), Roberto Matta (Chilean), Carlos Poveda (Costa Rican), Omar Rayo (Colombian), and Antonio Seguí (Argentinean). . Works by many of the artists represented in the collection and in Dreams and Realities are rarely seen in the area, making this a significant addition to ARTE 2010.

Leo Villareal: Recent Works
Through January 3 2011
Leo Villareal explores the potency of light. He creates complex patterns of light-emitting diodes (LED) based on simple rules and encoded programming. While mathematical in origin, these pixels and patterns act as personalities that develop into something organic. By building sequences and defining the conditions the artist creates an immersive experience defined by light.

Sky (Tampa)
On view nightly, the south façade of the new Tampa Museum of Art features Sky (Tampa), a dramatic 12,000-square-foot public art commission that illuminates the downtown core. The exterior of the new museum features programmable LED lights, 45 feet high and 300 feet long, embedded within two-layers of perforated aluminum panels. In daylight, the museum’s façade creates a moiré-like pattern, and in darkness the LED light installation glows with Villarreal’s signature light-coded and hypnotic dance.

The City of Tampa has enjoyed national and international recognition for its celebration of light art. Offered in 2006 and 2009 and an initiative of the City’s Art Programs Division Lights on Tampa invites artists from around the globe to create light works in downtown Tampa.

Gasparilla Film Festival presents Once Upon a Time in Rio and Pedaco de Papel (Brazil)
November 10 7pm
Once Upon a Time in Rio: (117min; 2009) Young De lives alone with his mother Bernadete. He belongs to this invisible class, working as a hot dog vendor at one of the stalls in Ipanema. His brother Beto was killed when he was a child, and his adopted brother Carlao is in jail after being wrongly accused of a robbery - a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time in a racist society. One day at the beach, De meets Nina, the only child of a lawyer, Evandro. They fall in love, despite coming from vastly different communities. Unfolding like a fairy tale, Once Upon a Time in Rio is a tragic love story set in a city divided by economic privilege and prejudice. Through De and Nina's tale, Silveira explores the absurdity of a society in which people live in close proximity yet stand worlds apart.
Pedaco de Papel: (18min; 2010) Greed, power, innocence, tragedy. Following the path of a money bill, since its printing until its final destination, the audience is introduced to the extremes our society is made of. How far would you go for a piece of paper?
